Definitely keep him in the crate while you are gone until he is at least trained, but you can even keep leaving him in there while you are gone so that he stays used to it. We also put our dog in there at night. She barked the first couple of nights, but after that she was fine. To train him, take him out every couple of hours, and go with him to the section you want him to go in. We had a set of bells by the door, and we rang them when we took her out. She then learned to ring the bells when she had to go out.
