Difficulty traveling with Criminal record?

Hi ppl, can anyone tell me ... I wanna travel to Japan next month, but I have a criminal record from the UK. I'm afraid they wont let me in if they know this as Japan is a very strict country!!. Will they know about the UK record when going through passport control??. What if I state that I do not have a criminal record on the immigration arrival form??.
