Why are Americans so fixated on the amount of melanin in a person's skin?

I think you mean most Americans who are Conservative, or, I'm sorry to say, the average white person who worships Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Sarah Palin, etc. They really just have nothing better to do.
